Accommodation Site for NGOs Set Up in Tohbetsu Town
Tohbetsu Town of Ishikari County has now been decided as the accommodation site for the Japanese and foreign NGOs convening for the Hokkaido Toyako Summit.
The NGO accommodation site is the school grounds of Nakagoya Junior High School which had closed down. Since about 3 years ago, the old school has been handed over by the town to a civic group known as the Disaster Relief Network Hokkaido, which has been using it to store blankets and emergency food provisions.
According to the International Camp Executive Committee which has been looking for a camp site, tents will be set up in the old school playground over this weekend. Anywhere from 300 to 400 people are anticipated to camp there during the Summit.
The City of Sapporo was planning to designate the campsite in Nishioka of Toyohira Ward as the accommodation site for the NGOs, but the NGOs had rejected the site, objecting to the presence of security guards.
